My 2017 Ford Explorer automatic transmission is starting to slip and overheat when I drive up the steep hills towards Aua. It feels like it loses power and smells like burnt fluid. Is there any mechanic shop in Pago Pago that actually rebuilds transmissions or do I have to buy a whole new transmission assembly from the mainland?
The steep island grades combined with our high humidity kills transmissions fast if people do not install an auxiliary transmission cooler. Most local shops will just refuse to rebuild it because they cannot source the internal clutch packs and valve bodies quickly. They will tell you to swap it out.
Hey @Manu_a_Cruiser, drop by my shop near Tafuna airport tomorrow morning. Before you panic about a full rebuild, let us drain the fluid, check for metal shavings in the pan, and run a diagnostic on the solenoids. Sometimes it is just a failing torque converter clutch or old oxidized fluid that lost its viscosity due to the constant uphill stress. If we catch it early, a flush and a new filter might buy you another year.
